General Hospital’s Spinelli – a Geek for All Seasons
Kate has been watching General Hospital for many years, practically since she was born. When her Mom and Sisters and she get together, GH is often a subject of discussion; most phone calls contain the phrase: “What day are you on?”
Lots of people make fun of soap operas, even though a lot of prime time shows follow a similar format. Like many TV shoes, a soap opera really means something to you when you find a character that you can really relate to. For example, Kate was born around the time of a character Robin Scorpio, so she and her Mom feel very connected to Robin and Anna.
I’ve tolerated the Soap watching for a few years, and at times have found myself wrapped up in the action. Over the last 2 years, a character has popped up on the show that connects to geeks and those of us who may have had slightly awkward teen years: Spinelli.
Spinelli is the computer geek of all computer geeks, using TV magic to hack into security systems and get information on many characters. He also speaks in cryptic fantasy & 1337 speech patterns that are great to entertain and attempt to decipher. Here is a link to his description on Wikipedia
As Kate and her family have been enjoying GH, Kate drew up an “I Speak Spinelli” design, complete with his beverage of choice: Orange Soda.
